We have gathered the most important events on Brexit of the last couple of years, leading to where we are today.
What has happened so far?
June 2016: Voters in the UK decided in a referendum that the UK should leave the European Union.
March 2019: Brexit was due to take place but got delayed.
January 31st, 2020: The UK officially left the EU and with this entered an 11-month transition period.
March 2020: The negotiations on trade in goods and other areas started.
June 30th, 2020: The deadline for the extension of the transition period passed.
What will happen in the upcoming months?
Status quo: The UK is still in the transition period – this means the UK remains in the EU’s customs union and single market and continues to obey EU rules.
October 15th, 2020: Boris Johnson has set this deadline for an agreement to be in place, to allow time for a ratification process and the UK and EU to get ready for the deal.
December 31st, 2020: The transition period of Brexit ends and that means that the negotiations must be finished at that point. The UK will then leave the EU’s Single Market and Customs Union. This will also see other major changes happen, e.g. free movement of people will end and business trading with the EU will change and follow different rules. This can mean that if a trade deal is not in place, Britain will return to the basic World Trade Organization terms, meaning tariffs on goods and border checks.
